When thinking about Mothers Day 2021 we wanted to create a special gift to accompany our Spirits.
We love working with talented, local, independent businesses. Where possible we try to collaborate with businesses that share our ethos and are as enthusiastic and passionate about what they do as we are about what we do.
One of the priorities when coming up with ideas for this gift were that it had to be able to be delivered by courier along with a 70cl bottle of spirits without ramping up the postage and packaging costs.
We wanted to create something truly unique, hand crafted and luxurious - just like our Barry Island Gin and Barry Island Rum. We wanted something that could be enjoyed alongside a Gin and Tonic or Rum and Ginger Ale as a treat during lockdown nights in.
From this, our exclusive and unique Barry Island Gin candles have been created, and they're absolutely stunning.
Firstly we spoke to our incredibly talented Goodsheds neighbours Matthew Jones Ceramics.
We're long-term admirers of Matt's work and have been looking for the right opportunity to work together. This was the first of two projects we've collaborated on (the other is coming later in the year...).
As the first part of the project, Matt created a stunning hand thrown Maxi Tea Light Candle Holder in his beautiful, bespoke Periwinkle Blue for us.
This hand made candle holder is made using a terracotta crank clay mixture to give the beautiful textured finish and glazed with Matthew Jones Ceramics bespoke glaze fired at 1260 degrees C. Due to their hand-crafted nature, each holder is unique and beautiful.
We then put the holders in the hands of the lovely RhiWax. Rhiannon specialises in creating luxury wax melts and candles, all of which are hand poured in small batches in Barry.
Rhi carefully set and filled the candle holders with Lime, Basil & Mandarin Scented Rapeseed & Coconut Wax. We chose this wax because it's vegan, 100% plant-based, with no additives and is palm-free. The scent has notes of peppery basil and aromatic white thyme which brings a twist to the scent of limes on an ocean breeze. Perfect for our Barry Island Spirits candle.
Once the original candle has finished, you can clean out and reuse the holder for a tealight or as a trinket dish.
We're exceptionally proud of the final result. Our unique, limited edition Barry Island Gin candles have been handmade in South Wales through collaboration, passion and community spirit.
